DENVER — The monolith that mysteriously disappeared from the Utah desert is either moving from location to location or inspiring some imaginative copycats.
A metallic structure similar to the one in Utah appeared Saturday in front of McDevitt Taco Supply in Boulder. Owner Clayton McDevitt insisted he had no idea how it got there.
"I’m not sure where this one came from," McDevitt said. "We've got a lot of friends, funny guys."
Some customers believed it was a publicity stunt, while others posed for pictures.
"It attracts people. It's a nice thing in this era of the pandemic," said Frank Merrem, a McDevitt customer.
In an email Saturday, Skylar Mason said a similar structure appeared on the patio of the Morrison Holiday Bar. Mason, who does advertising for the bar, would not admit to it being a publicity stunt, but said customers were enjoying it.
"Especially with everything else going on right now, this is something giggly and funny," Mason said.
A monolith was erected near Colorado’s Spaceport in Watkins last week, but creator Bill Zempel admitted he put it there to create smiles and start conversations.
Monoliths have also "appeared" in California and Romania, and outside businesses in Pittsburgh, Las Vegas and Atlanta.
