GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. — About 10 miles south of Rifle, the Middle Mamm Fire continues to burn beyond 1,000 acres.
The fire, which is named after the nearby Middle Mamm Creek, started in late July and has been burning since. As of Tuesday at 2 p.m., it was estimated at 1,069 acres and was 23% contained. Fire officials have determined lightning or another natural cause sparked the blaze.
Fire crews used Sunday's favorable weather to make process securing the fire lines as the fire consumed fuels within the perimeter. By Tuesday afternoon, the fire was transitioned back into local control.
Authorities are reminding people in the area that flying drones over wildfires is prohibited.
Parts of the White River National Forest and Grand Mesa National Forest are closed. Multiple trails in this area are also closed.
No evacuations were in place as of Tuesday at noon.
