CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — The sons of former Broncos player Ed McCaffrey are being credited with helping to save the life of a 72-year-old climber who fell in Castle Rock.

On Saturday afternoon, Dan Smoker was with his 13-year-old grandson descending the massive rock formation called Castle Rock when the elderly climber slipped and fell.

The McCaffery boys — Max, Christian and Dylan — were with a group of people when they came upon the injured climber and leaped into action, rendering aid to Smoker and comforting the 13-year-old.

Smoker was taken to a nearby hospital with several broken bones including his femur, pelvis and nine ribs. He also suffered internal bleeding and is expected to remain in the hospital for an extended period of time.

Smoker’s son, Dan Smoker Jr., told Denver7 it’s a miracle his father survived and credits McCaffery’s sons and the other hikers for their quick action.

The younger Smoker tweeted: “Michael Mann are great football players, but even better humans. Yesterday, they helped save my dads life after he fell off of Castle Rock. They comforted my son when he was alone. Then showed up at the hospital to check in.”
