Mesa County school district approves giving medical marijuana to students on campus

Posted

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Parents and guardians in Mesa County will now be allowed to administer medical marijuana to students across the school district.

KJCT-TV in Grand Junction reports District 51 school leaders approved the new policy during a Board of Education meeting Tuesday night.

Under the new policy, the student’s primary caregiver (parent, guardian or responsible adult over 18-years-old) would have to provide the school with a copy of the student’s valid medical marijuana card and would have to talk with school administrators about when, where and how they will administer the drug to the student.

Neither school staff nor peers would not be allowed to administer the drug to any student in need.

The school district’s policy also states the drug would have to be in the form of CBD oils that “can be administered and fully ingested and absorbed in a short period of time.” Smokable marijuana will not be allowed and anything other than CBD oils (patches, for example), would have to be discussed with school administrators beforehand.

Speaking to our ABC affiliate in Grand Junction, school officials said they didn't really have a district-wide policy in place before Tuesday’s vote.

They also said they aren't sure how many kids are treated with medical marijuana across District 51 due to lack of regulation.
