GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — A suspect has been taken into custody after he told police he had opened gunfire on several unoccupied cars at Cherry Creek High School early Monday.
Around 4:20 a.m., a Greenwood Village police sergeant encountered a male of unknown age on the Cherry Creek High School campus. The person told police that he had discharged his firearm into several unoccupied cars in front of the Education Services Center, said Rodney Valenzuela with the Greenwood Village Police Department.
When police investigated the scene, they found damage to cars that matched the man’s story. He was taken into custody.
"We are currently trying to question the suspect and learn the purpose behind his actions,” Valenzuela said.
As of early Monday morning, he said police hadn’t found any correlation between the suspect and the school. A call sent to parents from the school district said he is not believed to be associated with any school in the district. There is no threat against the school, the call said, but parents and students may see an increased police presence on campus.
The suspect’s name has not yet been released. Nobody was injured.
