GOLDEN, Colo. – A man who was walking on the light rail tracks was struck and killed Friday evening in Golden, witnesses and police say.

The man was hit by the Regional Transportation District W Line train just before 8 p.m., Golden police spokesperson Karlyn Tilley said Friday evening.

Witnesses told investigators the man was walking westbound on the light rail tracks near Ulysses Street and 6th Avenue. When the eastbound train left the Golden station, the driver saw the man, hit his horn and brakes, according to police, but was unable to avoid hitting the man, who died as a result of the crash.

The man has not been identified, Tilley said. Golden police and RTD investigators are looking into the incident. Ulysses Street is closed because of the crash and “is expected to remain closed for several more hours,” Tilley said in a release.

The W Line was also closed between Red Rocks College Station and the Jefferson County Government Center Station. No alternate bus service was in place as of 10:30 p.m.
