AURORA, Colo. — A man in a wheelchair was hit by a car while attempting to cross a street in Aurora Sunday evening.
Around 5:45 p.m. Sunday, officers with the Aurora Police Department responded to a report of car that had hit a person in a wheelchair at E. Colfax Avenue and Boston Street, according to Sgt. William Revelle with the police department's traffic section.
When authorities arrived, they found a 62-year-old man in a wheelchair who had tried to cross northbound across E. Colfax Avenue in the street.
Witnesses told Aurora police that the driver fled the scene.
A short time late, the empty suspect vehicle — a red 1998 Isuzu Rodeo — was found about a block away. Around that same time, the driver returned to the scene, Revelle said.
The man in the wheelchair was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
No charges have been filed as of 10 a.m. Monday.
Traffic investigators are handling this investigation. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this crash. There is not a crosswalk at that intersection.
The names of those involved are not being released.
