Lake Christine Fire evacuations and more: 5 Things to Know for Thursday, July 5

Posted

Good morning. Here are 5 Things to Know for Thursday, July 5, 2018.

1. Additional evacuations overnight
Fire officials issued more mandatory evacuations overnight for people living near the fast-growing Lake Christine Fire near Basalt. The evacuation center also has moved to Roaring Fork HIgh School in Carbondale. The latest evacuation info can be found on the Eagle County Sheriff's Facebook page.

2. Why isn't the supertanker helping fight fires?
Paperwork seems to be holding up the Colorado Springs-based Global Supertanker. The Colorado Division of Fire Protection officials said Wednesday that the next step for the supertanker is getting approvals to fly to affected areas. The state had signed off on a call-when-needed contract to use the supertanker last week.

3. Cave rescue effort continues
It's a race against time in Thailand as rescue crews try to save 12 boys and their soccer coach, who have been trapped in a flooded cave for days. More rain is in the forecast and that could push the water levels up even further, making the rescue even more difficult.

4. Vigil for Colfax stabbing victim
Friends and family of 17-year-old Reese Grant-Cobb plan to hold a vigil for the slain teen tonight. Grant-Cobb was stabbed to death outside the Bourbon Grill on E. Colfax Sunday night and police continue to search for two suspects in his death. The vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. at East High School.

5. Strong storms possible this afternoon
We could see some storms pop up in the Denver area this afternoon, bringing more wind and lightning than meaningful moisture. High temperatures in the area will be in the mid-80s. By Friday, temperatures will return to around 90 degrees with only a slightly chance for storms.
