LIMON, Colo. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the apparent killing of an inmate at the Limon Correctional Facility.

The Department of Corrections says 25-year-old George McClain died Thursday in a housing unit and his death is being investigated as a homicide.

Department spokeswoman Laurie Kilpatrick says how he died is still being investigated. The department's inspector general's office is handling the investigation with help from the Colorado Bureau of Investigations and the district attorney's office.

Background on what McClain was convicted of wasn't immediately available.

The Limon prison houses about 950 inmates under a range of security levels. It's the same prison where an inmate beat guard Eric Autobee to death in 2002 and an inmate Jeffrey Heird was killed in a stabbing in 2004.
