To make sure you're getting the information you need, Consumer Reports says you should periodically check your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for any open recalls.

Not sure how to do that? The best way is to check your VIN on the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration's website, which lists recalls for the past 15 years.

NHTSA said you can sign also sign up for future alerts by registering your make, model, year and email address.
