DENVER — Whether you call it a carriage house, a garage apartment or a mother-in-law's home, accessory dwellings units, or ADUs, are growing in popularity.

Some people use them for family members, others build them for rental income.

In Denver, about 20 percent of neighborhoods allow ADUs. Other cities are also looking at approving ADUs as a way to add more housing.

"We're in such a housing shortage in Denver, it's a really great way to add some housing stock," said Sarah Senderhauf, the sales manager at L&D Construction.

L&D is hosting an ADU home tour on Saturday to show off some of the backyard homes they've built.

"For anyone thinking of possibly building one, this is a great opportunity to see how much yard space you'll still have, what you get for $200,000 to $250,000 and talk to homeowners about their experiences," Senderhauf said.

The VIP tour includes the tour and a class for $115. The afternoon tour is self-guided and costs $40. Enter promo code CHANNEL7 and you'll get 20 percent off tickets. Learn more here.
