DENVER — Gov. Jared Polis’ Inaugural Ball had one popular theme: inclusivity.

Hundreds of people came to the sold out event at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Polis is America’s first openly gay governor.

For many guests in attendance, it was about celebrating history.

“I am just proud, as a gay man, to live in a state that elected a gay governor,” said Todd Creger. “I came from Texas and politics over there are not so kind to the LGBTQ community.”

Polis took the stage in his iconic blue sneakers, which he wore on the campaign, even in a suit. The shoes became the theme of the Inaugural Ball making it the Blue Sneaker Ball.

“We wanted to set the tone we are setting here tonight that Colorado is truly a state for everyone to thrive,” Polis said.

The Inaugural Blue Sneaker Ball was a sold-out event. People wore sneakers of all shades with evening gowns and suits. Others dressed in a more theatrical fashion.

“It’s time to show up and show out and the more sparkle the better,” said Candice Ferguson.

Many guests purchased blue sneakers just for the party.

“I think it’s really fun and really comfortable and really cute too,” said Courtney Banayad.

Cindy Lauper and Denver’s Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats performed.

After the party, Polis said it was time to get to work for all Coloradans.

“It doesn’t matter if you are a worker or a company owner or a farm hand or a rancher — we want you to be able to live your Colorado dream in our great state,” he said.
