Gen X parking lot turns 'fast and furious' on the weekends

Posted

DENVER -- Neighbors of Federal Boulevard in south Denver are fed up over people driving dangerously in their neighborhood.

Shocking new video shot by a concerned neighbor, Alonzo Renteria, shows car after car taking a turn burning rubber in the Gen X parking lot.  Smoke billows into the air as a large crowd cheers in the video, shot Sunday night.

"We opened the door and you see a big gust of smoke coming over, and they were going at it again," Renteria said.

Renteria said he shot the video around 9 p.m. Sunday about 30 minutes after a Denver police officer had already come by and broken the crowd up.

"[He made] no arrests.  He just sat there with his lights on," Renteria said.  "Right when the cop left, they came right back again."

Renteria said he called police again but officers never came back -- even though the nearest police station sits about four blocks away.

"Nothing happened," Renteria said.

Last week, Denver police said they staff up to 10 officers to deal solely with these types of problems on and near Federal Boulevard.  Sunday night, Denver police said most officers were at 9-11 memorials, but stressed forcing the rowdy crowd out of the area will just push the problem somewhere else.

"It's very frustrating.  It's very scary at the same time.  Like I said, it's the weekend. My kids are in front playing and last weekend they came through our fence.  What's it going to take, a death?" said Renteria.

A meeting last week between Denver city councilors and Denver police to talk about the issue was postponed.  It's expected to be rescheduled for this week.

Denver police say officers issued two citations, made two arrests and impounded one vehicle near Federal over the weekend.
