GEORGETOWN, Colo. – An overpass on Interstate 70 near Georgetown appears to have escaped serious damage after a fatal crash involving an 18-wheeler Tuesday morning.

The driver of the semi, an adult male, was killed when — for an unknown reason — the westbound truck crossed the median into oncoming lanes of traffic and hit a pillar of an overpass near Georgetown. The crash was reported around 10:30 a.m.

An adult woman inside the truck was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her condition is not known. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The crash prompted troopers to close both directions of I-70 in the area. Westbound lanes reopened around 3 p.m. Eastbound lanes reopened shortly before 8 p.m., CDOT said.

It took crews hours to remove the truck and clean up spilled fuel at the site of the crash.

A preliminary inspection of the bridge showed no major damage, CDOT said during a conference call. However, the total extent of the damage won't be known until the truck is removed.
