DENVER — An oil and gas company behind a plan to drill along the western boundary of Rocky Flats has withdrawn its application with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC).

Highlands Natural Resources Corp. confirmed to Denver7 that an application with plans for a multi-well pad along Colorado 93 has been withdrawn.

In a statement released Thursday, the London-based energy company said its decision to withdraw the application came after community concerns related to the proposed development.

“This determination comes after extensive discussions with communities and other stakeholders, including people who live in the project area, mineral owners, county, state and federal representatives, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, COGCC and others,” the release read.

On Tuesday, Highlands Natural Resources Corp. told the town of Superior it would cancel its plans to drill wells near the northeast corner of the former nuclear weapons plant. Thursday’s announcement puts the remaining site on hold.

Rocky Flats manufactured plutonium triggers for nuclear bombs. After a $7 billion cleanup, most of the site became a national wildlife refuge.
