Elitch Gardens is planning on opening to the public on May 1 with increased sanitation protocols and standards to keep guests and employees safe.

Park managers have been working since spring 2020 on a reopening plan that would allow the park to stay open in a safe way in 2021, according to the park's website. Elitch Gardens submitted its plan to the city, which was then forwarded along to the state.

"We are extremely hopeful that we will be formally granted permission to open this spring on our planned opening date of May," the park's website reads. "We look forward to joining the other family attractions and bringing back safe outdoor fun to Colorado families."

The park postponed its 2020 opening day before announcing in late July that it would remain closed for the entire 2020 season. It was the first time in 130 years that it was not able to open.

The park will open to the general public on May 1. Pass holders are able to visit starting April 24.

New COVID-19-related policies will be outlined on the Elitch Gardens website closer to opening day, but include social distancing and sanitation inside the park.

The park said that in the unlikely event that it can't open in 2021, the 2021 season pass will extend to the 2022 season.

The park's website says that pass holders who experience a "COVID-19 health-related change or concern" are prohibited from visiting the park for the season, but their passes will be extended through the 2022 season.
