DENVER -- Twenty-three-year-old Elijah McClain was killed more than a month ago and since then, his family has been demanding an independent review of the case. The family also says they want the body camera footage to be released to the public.

The family's attorney, Mari Newman, says police showed them the body camera footage.

"He is laying on the ground vomiting, he is begging, he is saying, 'I can't breathe.' One of the officers says, 'Don't move again. If you move again, I'm calling in a dog to bite you.'"

She says before officers put their hands on McClain, their cameras go dark.

"Three out of three of those police officers claim that their cameras dislodged when they went hands on. Well, that's awfully convenient isn't it?" Newman said.

Aurora police say once their case is complete, they'll present it to the District Attorney's Office for review. Before then, they say the coroner's report still needs to be completed.

Newman says there is no reason why the public shouldn't be able to see the video.

"This community is entitled to see that video of what these law enforcement officers did to Elijah McClain. There is no justification for the city of Aurora to continue to withhold that video," she said.
