Did you know most spices expire? Here's how long some common spices last

It's time to check the expiration dates on the spices in your cupboard.

It turns out many spices actually expire.

"Just as you would select the freshest fruits and vegetables for your cooking, and the freshest meats and seafood, you want to make sure you have freshest herbs and spices to flavor the foods you're cooking," said lifestyle expert Eva Fry. "If you're using old or expired spices, you're doing a disservice to your cooking. You're actually adding the wrong flavors and bad flavor profiles to your foods."

Fry says leafy items like parsley, oregano and thyme only last one to two years.

Ground spices like cinnamon, cumin and ginger last two to three years.

But salt and vanilla extract last indefinitely.
