Denver Meow Wolf accepting Colorado artist submissions

Posted

DENVER, Colo. -- Meow Wolf plans to be the biggest art show and cultural exhibit Denver has ever seen. On Friday, artists have their chance to land a spot at the much-anticipated exhibit when it comes to Denver in 2020.

While Meow Wolf has permanent artists based in Santa Fe, N.M., it plans to enlist Colorado artists for more than 40 percent of the exhibit.

“We’re going to see amazing ideas that we couldn’t have thought of ourselves and so we are putting out an open call for people of all talents, all artistic visions, capabilities, all levels of experience,” said Meow Wolf's John Feins.

The hands-on exhibit will feature 3D surround sound and video installations. Think of it as walking into a story and immersing yourself in the art. Before its official opening though in 2020, people will get a sneak peak of sorts, with a dark ride called the “Kalaidescape” at Elitch Gardens, which is set to open in April 2019.

Not everyone is happy about it, however. Sun Valley residents are worried the exhibit, along with other development in the area, will push them out by raising property taxes and transforming the area into a trendy bar scene. Meow Wolf has donated $250,000 to Sun Valley nonprofits, plans to hire residents and will offer them free admission too.

“Ultimately, what you want to do is bring excitement and bring inspiration, bring happiness and bring all the positivity that art can make you want to bring that to more people, to as many people as you can,” said Feins.

If you need a little guidance, and want to see the behind-the-scenes process, Meow Wolf is having special sessions in Denver on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Steam on the Platte at 10:30 a.m.; Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
