You're there to travel out of Denver, but the trip from DIA ticket counters to Concourse C could be regarded as a journey itself at this, the largest American airport by size.
Little did we know, Denver International Airport takes up more space than a few major American cities.
DIA posted a photo comparing its size to Manhattan, San Francisco and Miami. Denver's hub takes up 53-square-miles of space, or 34,000 acres.
Comparatively...
- Manhattan: 34-square-miles
- San Francisco: 47-square-miles
- Miami: 36-square-miles
- Denver: 155-square miles
--
- Chicago's O'Hare: 7,200 acres
- Atlanta's Hartsfield: 4,700 acres
- New York's JFK: 4,930 acres
Twenty-five airlines, six runways, three concourses -- other airports may hold more but there's room to grow. DIA wrote on Facebook that the current structure was designed to allow for expansion. The goal is 12 runways in the future.
The airport was dubbed the nation's fifth busiest overall by Airports Council International this year. It comes as no surprise that DIA served a record number of passengers in November. Officials are still calculating December data.
We often tell people that DEN is the largest airport in North America, which is great because we have room to double our size over time. Here's something to put that in perspective...
