DENVER — Denver Health Medical Center is expanding its paramedic team.

Denver Health has about 209 paramedics right now. They want to hire 10 to 12 new ones before the next paramedic academy starts in August.

They're taking applications from people with and without experience, but they prefer people with experience in a busy 911 system.

"We are an urban system and run a lot of medical calls," said Julie Arellano, the EMS operations captain for Denver Health.

The academy will run about 20 weeks and includes a combination of rides and classroom time.
