DENVER — A Denver city council committee approved Denver International Airport's $105 million proposal to upgrade the inner workings of the transportation hub.

A big chunk of the money will be allocated for areas the public does not see.

The first contract, up to $45 million, would go to upkeep of the baggage system. That would include the carousels in the terminal and the inner workings underground. Airport officials say the money would pay for three years of maintenance.

DIA also wants to spend up to $60 million dollars for four contractors who will work on an on-call basis.

They would essentially be on stand-by to make fixes. Each contract would total up to $15 million. They would be three-year contracts to "support the safe operation of the terminal, rapid customer growth and aging infrastructure that requires modernization."

The committee approved the proposal Wednesday afternoon. The proposal goes to the mayor's council, then the full city council.
