DENVER – Colorado State Patrol officials are looking for a driver who they said badly injured a woman during a hit-and-run on Interstate 25 early Monday.

An initial investigation into the crash revealed a 23-year-old woman got out of her 2001 Volkswagen which was stopped on the shoulder of the highway near mile marker 215 so she could change a tire.

Two vehicles - an unknown silver or white full sized pickup and a 2015 Dodge Pickup - were both traveling north on I-25 when both drifted onto the shoulder, according to CSP Trooper Josh Lewis.

The unknown pickup struck the Volkswagen and the woman was struck by another vehicle, according to Lewis. She sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Denver General for treatment, Lewis said. Her condition is unknown at this time.

The driver of the Dodge, 26-year-old Luis Chacon Canero, of Denver, was not injured in the crash and was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver of the unknown pickup left the scene of the crash, according to Lewis.

"It is possible the unknown silver or white pickup was traveling with Chacon Canero," Lewis said in a press release.

He added the pickup will have damage "consistent with hitting or sideswiping" the gold Volkswagen.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Colorado State Patrol at (303) 239-44501. Reference case #1D181851.

Police have not identified either the driver or the victim.
