People jumped from windows to escape a fire at a condominium complex at South Parker Road and East Florida Avenue late Wednesday night.

Sixteen people were hurt and more than 100 people were forced out of the Country Club Villas when the fire started at about 11 p.m., according to the Cunningham Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, the hallways were full of smoke and people were jumping out of windows to escape, officials told 7NEWS. There are no balconies on the building  and no sprinklers, fire officials said.

An Arapahoe County Sheriff's deputy is among the 16 people hurt in the fire, officials said. Most were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but six people went to the hospital.

The Red Cross opened a shelter for displaced residents at The Potter House of Denver at 9495 E. Florida Ave. Officials said about 25 people were there overnight.
