Colorado escapee Stephen Crouse arrested in Idaho

ONEIDA COUNTY, Idaho -- A man wanted for escaping a Colorado state prison was arrested in Idaho this weekend after allegedly assaulting his wife and officers.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office said they were called to a home Friday after Stephen Victor Crouse, 34, had allegedly attempted to strangle his spouse and then threatened to harm her family.

Crouse managed to run away, but was found hours later.

"Later in the evening, Crouse was located by officers and when he was contacted resisted arrest and assaulted deputies by hitting and head butting them as well as spitting on them," the Oneida County Sheriff's Office said.

Crouse was Tased and arrested on his Colorado felony warrants, officials said.

He will also face charges of battery on an officer, attempted strangulation on spouse, attempted strangulation on an officer, agg. assault with weapon on officer, domestic violence, resisting, possession of controlled substances,  destruction of telecommunications device and injury to child, officials said.

Crouse's wife, Jeana Crouse, was arrested for delay and obstructing officers and harboring a fugitive, deputies said.

Crouse had walked away from a halfway house in Durango on Sept. 26, Colorado Department of Corrections spokeswoman Laurie Kilpatrick told Denver7.

He was sentenced to state prison in 2014 after being convicted in Archuleta County court of felony burglary of a dwelling, assault causing injury and being a habitual domestic-violence offender, according to court records.

Crouse has a 12-page Colorado arrest history, including prior arrests for escape, several arrests for domestic violence-related assault, along with felony menacing, vehicular eluding, obstructing police, harassment, child abuse, and aggravated motor vehicle theft.

In 2005, he was one of three inmates who escaped from the Archuleta County Detention Center in Pagosa Springs, according to KOAT.com. He was recaptured, convicted and sentenced to state prison for the escape along with a conviction for felony menacing with a weapon, according to court records.
