FRISCO, Colo. — A small Colorado town is getting ready to set some old Christmas trees ablaze.
Frisco, with a population of 3,000, is accepting Christmas trees to help fuel the town’s annual Spontaneous Combustion celebration on Jan. 26.
The trees must be bare of lights, tinsel, garland and other decorations. They can be dropped off at the Frisco Bay Marina dirt lot on the corner of Highway 9 and Marina Road anytime until 4 p.m. Jan. 26. The location is open 24 hours a day.
Nora Gilbertson, special event manager with the town, said anybody is welcome to bring a tree to donate to the event, no matter if they live in Frisco or not.
Spontaneous Combustion is a community celebration that features a bonfire, fireworks, DJ, chili and beverages, including beer. All funds will benefit the Summit Nordic Ski Club, which has provided access to Nordic skiing to youth in the county for almost 50 years.
The bonfire — which is usually at least six feet high and 30 feet in diameter — will begin at 6 p.m. and fireworks will follow at 8 p.m.
While it has a "cool, small town vibe to it," Gilbertson said it's a great opportunity for visitors to feel like a local.
