CDOT worker dies after being struck by passing vehicle near Pagosa Springs

PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo. — A state highway worker struck by passing vehicle near Pagosa Springs earlier this month has died, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced Monday.

Nolan Olson succumbed to his injuries on Sunday at St. Anthony’s Hospital after he was struck on Feb. 2.

Olson was a member of the Pagosa Springs maintenance patrol and was filling potholes on US Highway 160 when the collision occurred. It’s not clear if the driver of the vehicle was cited.

According to CDOT, Olson was an equipment operator with the agency for 14 years. His co-workers and supervisors have expressed his death is a tremendous loss to the organization.

“We lost an incredible team member in Nolan. He was the type of person who would not have wanted his loss to have gone without shining a spotlight on the risks that our crews take every day when they go out on the roads to serve the public,” said Michael Lewis, Executive Director of CDOT.

Fellow CDOT employees, families and friends created a Go Fund Me website to help provide financial support to Mr. Olson’s family. To contribute to the fund, visit:  www.gofundme.com/go-nolan.
