GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. — A new wildfire in the western part of the state is continuing to grow.

The Cache Creek Fire started Saturday evening about eight miles southwest of the city Rifle. As of Tuesday around 9:45 a.m., the fire was about 400 acres and 0 percent contained.

Evacuations are in order for four cabins along Battlement Creek Reservoir Road.

Fifty fire personnel are working on the blaze, which is burning mostly heavy timber and dead trees on White River National Forest land. It is growing primarily to the west as it burns on steep and rugged terrain, which has been challenging for firefighters.

Smoke is visible from the I-70 corridor in Rifle, Parachute and Rulison.

As of Wednesday morning, it was unclear how the fire started.

An update is expected Wednesday morning, per the Cache Creek Fire Facebook page

The public is encouraged to stay clear of the area as firefighters work on their operations. For more information, call 970-984-8839 or click here for the Inciweb page
