Buy bus, train tickets on your phone with new RTD Mobile Tickets app

Posted

DENVER – Need to hop on a bus but don’t have any cash handy? The Regional Transportation District will now allow you to buy day passes from your smartphone.

RTD on Wednesday launched its new Mobile Tickets app, which is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.

The app allows riders to buy local and regional day passes using a debit or credit card. Rather than a printed ticket, the app displays a digital ticket that the rider shows to the bus operator or fare inspector.

Right now, the app only offers day passes. RTD said on Twitter Wednesday that single-ride tickets and monthly passes are “in the works” but the agency didn’t say when those features would be available.

The app also won’t allow customers to preload their account with tickets. Any purchased tickets expire at the end of the service day – 2:59 a.m. the day after the ticket is purchased – regardless of whether they’ve been activated. So no stocking up on tickets, at least for the time being.

RTD said Wednesday’s app launch was a “soft launch,” so expect to see more features added to the app sometime in the future.
