BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Boulder County Sheriff’s Office officials on Monday identified the suspect and deputy involved in a shootout over the weekend.
Deputy Teri Javes, a 19-year veteran of the force, was involved in the shooting on Highway 287 south of Longmont Saturday. She was not injured.
The suspect, identified Monday afternoon as Adrian Joseph Shaffer, 37, was shot several times and remains in “critical, grave condition” at a Denver hospital.
The sheriff's office said it received multiple calls from drivers about a man, later identified as Shaffer, acting aggressively toward motorists in the 7500 block of North 107th. The callers told dispatch they noticed he had a gun tucked into the waist band of his pants.
Investigators said the man opened fire on Javes when she pulled up to the scene. The gunfire shattered the window to the Javes's patrol SUV. The deputy returned fire, hitting Shaffer twice.

Shaffer is under investigation for attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer and other charges. His criminal history shows he crashed through a Lafayette mobile home park in 2010 and pleaded guilty to felony menacing in Coulder Co. from a 2004 incident.
Highway 287 was closed between Oxford Road and Niwot Road for most of the evening for the investigation. Javes remains on standard paid leave during the county’s investigation.
