DENVER — AT&T customers now have access to faster, next-generation 5G cell service in the Denver area.
The company announced it was launching the new service this week. Verizon and T-Mobile both already offer 5G service in the metro area.
Until now, AT&T has only offered its “5GE” service — essentially beefed up 4G LTE — in the Denver area.
With 5G, AT&T says it has seen peak download speeds of more than 2 Gbps, which is significantly faster than its existing network.
According to the carrier’s coverage map, AT&T customers should be able to receive a 5G signal across the Denver metro area, as well as in Boulder and north to Longmont.
There is one catch, however — in order to take advantage of the higher data speeds, customers must have a 5G-capable device, and there are currently only a handful available, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. Apple is rumored to be working on a 5G iPhone for release later this year.
