Anti-cyclist graffiti found along bike route in Jefferson County

Posted

CONIFER, Colo.- The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is looking for the person or persons who spray-painted graffiti aimed at cyclists along Black Mountain Drive.

The graffiti read "Kill All Pedalers" and "Cars Should Kill U".

The incident was reported during the Red Rocks Gran Fondo cycling event which was using the roadway on Saturday.

Cyclist Edward Upchurch has had his fair share with run-ins with drivers.

“I have been hit by a car twice,” said Upchurch.

He admits the graffiti isn’t normal.

“I don't think there is any place for threats graffiti on the highway, I just think this is dumb,” said Upchurch.

Jennifer Barbour who is the executive director of  team evergreen cycling, which is the largest biking club in state, wasn't surprised by the hateful remarks.

“It’s disheartening and unfortunately it's happening way more than we like to see,” said Barbour.

She claims the graffiti puts more strain on already fragile relationship between cyclist and drivers. She feels drivers aren’t fully aware of cycling rules.

“Drivers feel inconvenienced by cyclists but cyclists also do pay their taxes to use the road as well,” said Upchurch.

In July, tacks were scattered on Deer Canyon Road which is another popular cycling route in Jefferson County.

The tires on eight bicycles were flattened in that incident.

Calvin Chambers, 27, and his cousin Tyler Chambers,27,  were both cited for criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.
