8-year-old girl hit by car in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An 8-year-old girl was struck by a car in Colorado Springs Monday.

The girl was hit as she was crossing the street in a crosswalk outside a Colorado Springs elementary school.

A 37-year-old woman was stopped behind a truck at the crosswalk when police say she passed the truck in a middle lane and struck the child. 

A hospital treated the child for non-serious injuries. The woman was cited for careless driving and driving on a suspended license.

The Colorado Department of Transportation launched a pedestrian awareness program Tuesday. According to CDOT, Colorado saw 1,330 pedestrian crashes in 2015 - 59 of them deadly.
