FRANKTOWN, Colo. – A total of 49 emaciated horses surrendered by their owner have been taken to a rehabilitation center near Castle Rock for treatment.

The horses, found extremely underweight and infested with internal parasites, were taken in by the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center from the Colorado Department of Agriculture, according to Dumb Friends League spokeswoman Maia Brusseau.

Since arriving at Harmony, the horses have been receiving nourishing feed and necessary veterinary care, but it may take months for them to fully recover before they’re ready to be put up for adoption, Brusseau said.

“Many horses are going to need a substantial amount of time to recover and we are currently monitoring them very closely,” said Garret Leonard, director of the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center.

Leonard said they expect to invest more than $100,000 in their rehabilitation and recovery, and anyone wishing to help can do so by clicking here.

Currently, there are 161 horses at Harmony, Brusseau said, and in the last two months, the center has been successful in finding new homes for 50 horses.
