WELD COUNTY, Colo. – Two more cases of Salmonella have been confirmed in people who either ate at events catered by Burrito Delight earlier this month or ate at one of two of the chain’s locations.

The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment continues to investigate the Salmonella outbreak, which was first announced Thursday. At a Thursday news conference, an official said, “This has the potential to be a large outbreak.”

The WCDPHE now says there are 12 confirmed cases contracted due to the Burrito Delight food: six people who contracted it from food at Aims Community College events on Feb. 9 and 13; four people who ate at the Fort Lupton Burrito Delight location, and two who ate at a private business that also had an event catered by Burrito Delight.

The county’s health inspector said Thursday that the Fort Lupton and Dacono locations of Burrito Delight closed voluntarily after several health violations were found.

The officials said they were awaiting tests to see what type of Salmonella had been contracted in order to try and curb a possible further outbreak.

The department’s executive director, Mark E. Wallace, MD, MPH, said Salmonella typically causes diarrhea, upset stomach, fever and possible vomiting. Symptoms last between 4 and 7 days, and may appear up to three days after eating contaminated food.

The department is asking anyone with questions about the outbreak to call 970-304-6410 to speak with someone, or the non-staffed hotline at 970-300-4457. More information about the investigation can be found here.
