BROOMFIELD, Colo. – Two people were killed when a small airplane crashed in Broomfield on Friday.

Police said the plane, a Mustang II, crashed in the Anthem Ranch area just before noon. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash and police have not identified the deceased. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

Jennifer Rodi, a spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said the plane crashed around 11:50 a.m. She said investigators were not sure of the plane's flight plan and unsure where the flight originated from or what its final destination was.

Rodi said that several witnesses saw the plane just before it crashed flying quickly and lower than usual in the area. Rodi said the witnesses saw the plane flying from west to east before it tried to turn north toward the Erie Airport and crashed.

Rodi said a preliminary report about the crash would likely available next week, but that following reports would likely take months.

She said the county coroner's office would release the identities of the two victims.
