JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A 12-year-old child on a bicycle died following a collision with a vehicle in Jefferson County Friday evening.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. on W. Ken Caryl Avenue and W. Chatfield Avenue.

Sean Stephenson, 12, was going northbound on W. Chatfield, crossing the intersection against the crosswalk on Ken Caryl when an eastbound Nissan Xterra struck the child, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Sean's mother and father, Heather and Tom Stephenson, say their son had left home before dinner to get a snack with friends.

"I never thought he wouldn’t come home," said Heather Stephenson.

It’s this tragedy that has also sparked this family’s call for change.

"They need to do something so that no one else loses a child, no one else ever has to feel this immense pain because of that intersection," Heather Stephenson said.

Family members say Sean Stephenson loved to play the guitar and producing his own videos. He was the eldest brother to two young boys.

"He was supposed to come home. He was supposed to share his day with me and I’ll never hear that laugh. I’ll never hear that smile simply because of one moment," said Heather Stephenson.

The driver of the Nissan is a 50-year-old woman. She had a 18-year-old passenger in the SUV. They were not injured.

Troopers said no citation was issued because the 12-year-old child was at fault.
