DENVER – An 11-year-old child has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a woman earlier this month in Montrose County.
The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office said the juvenile, whose identity is not being released because they are a juvenile, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 62-year-old Karmen Keefauver.
Montrose County sheriff’s deputies and first responders were called out to a home in the 16200 block of Shavano Valley Road around 9 a.m. on Dec. 19 on the report of a woman who had been shot.
They found Keefauver at the scene and took her to Montrose Memorial Hospital, where she later died. The sheriff’s office said they determined the 11-year-old child was involved during the investigation of the shooting by the office and Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
The child is currently in custody at Grand Mesa Youth Services. The sheriff’s office wrote that it sends its “deepest condolences to the family of Karmen Keefauver for their tragic loss.” Further details about the shooting and any connection between the suspect and victim have not been released by the authorities.
