Schools closed due to Adams Co. deputy shooting investigation, manhunt

DENVER - More than a dozen schools are closed Thursday morning as law enforcement agencies continue to search for two suspects in the fatal shooting of an Adams County sheriff's deputy.

Deputy Heath Gumm, 31, was shot and killed while responding to a call in Thornton Wednesday night. One suspect is in custody but two suspects were still at large Thursday morning.

As a result, Mapleton Public Schools and Adams 12 Five Star Schools decided to close multiple schools.

The following Adams 12 schools are closed Thursday:

  • Early Childhood Education Center
  • Bollman
  • Thornton Elementary
  • The International School at Thornton Middle
  • Thornton High School
  • McElwain Elementary
  • Coronado Hills Elementary

The following Mapleton schools are closed Thursday:

  • Academy High School
  • Achieve Academy
  • Clayton Partnership School
  • Explore Elementary
  • MESA
  • MEC
  • Monterey Community School
  • Meadow Community School
  • North Valley School for Young Adults
  • Welby Community School
  • York International School

Mapleton Public Schools said Adventure Elementary, Big Picture College and Career Academy, all schools on the Global Campus and Valley View are all open.

Mapleton Schools also said Thursday afternoon all of its schools would be open again on Friday.
