RIFLE, Colo. — One person was injured after a traffic stop led to an officer-involved shooting in Rifle.
On Monday evening, officers with the Rifle Police Department made a vehicle stop on the Colorado River bridge between the Interstate 70 exit and Whiteriver Avenue.
The suspect had an active warrant.
Police saw he had a weapon in his hand when they contacted him.
When they confronted the suspect, he would not comply with detectives. According to police, shots were fired "for the health, safety and welfare of the general public."
The suspect who was shot was transported to a hospital, police said. He was later pronounced deceased.
No officers were injured.
No other information was available on what led to the shooting.
The bridge will remain closed until the investigation is complete, police said.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy. The Ninth Judicial District Critical Incident Team is investigating the shooting.
The Critical Incident Team is asking witnesses to call Investigator Matt Jenness at 970-665-0220. If the line is busy when you call, leave your name, home address and phone number so investigators can get back in touch.
