A former University of Colorado student is dead, murdered while vacationing in Mexico last Wednesday morning. Now, his family back in California wants to know how it happened, and who did it.

Twenty-seven-year-old Tayler Meyer was stabbed to death in Playa del Carmen, a popular beach vacation spot for American tourists this time of year.

Meyer’s family says he was there celebrating the birthday of a friend with about a dozen others, many of whom were also CU grads.

Meyer’s father, Kris, tells Denver 7 his son was stabbed just feet from the beaches of Playa del Carmen. His body was found about 10-miles from a vacation rental the 27-year-old reserved with a friend.

The U.S. Consulate has told the family that one person has been arrested for the murder.

Back in August, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning to all Americans that the risk of robbery, kidnapping and even murder have increased in the area this year.

Meyer’s friends are planning a vigil this Wednesday night in Denver.
