AURORA, Colo. -- What happens when a little girl's school has a "donuts with dad" day, but she doesn't have a dad?
In Aurora, a police officer was able to be the substitute dad.
The Aurora Police Department said it received a Facebook message last Thursday night explaining that Friday was "Donuts with Dad" day at Dartmouth Elementary School. The message said one of the students, Abygale-Rose, didn't have her dad to go with her because he had left the family and moved out of state.
"Abygale-Rose's mom reached out to the APD to see if we could have an officer swing by the school to see if we could help brighten up her daughters day," Aurora Police said. "Well it didn't take long to find a volunteer."
Aurora Police said Sergeant Mike Pitrusu spent the morning with Abygale-Rose enjoying donuts and showing off his patrol car to the kids.
"I can't even come close to expressing my gratitude for the Aurora Police Department, and especially Officer Mike Pitrusu," Abygale-Rose's mom, Jewel-Leilani Smejkal, told police. "He is a remarkable man with such a wonderful talent with kids, and just made my daughter's day. He made MY day! She will be talking about this day for weeks to come!"
