Runner hit by car was training for marathon

Posted

Deputies are looking for the driver who hit a jogger on University Boulevard Tuesday morning before sunrise and drove off.

A walker saw the jogger lying on the side of the road, bleeding, near Crossland Way, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. That's near Quebec Street, across from Highland Heritage Regional Park.

The jogger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. She was subsequently identified by her husband as Tina Benner.

Benner's husband says she made it through surgery and is now in the ICU.

Initial reports that her leg may have been severed were not true, he said, but she will have a long road to recovery.

Deputies initially said the suspect vehicle was a red Toyota or Lexus, with front end damage and a missing passenger side mirror. As deputies continued investigating, they said they found debris from three vehicles in the area, however, they later expressed confidence the Red Toyota/Lexus description is correct in this case.

There is a live traffic camera directly across the street from where the accident happened, but detectives said it is a live feed that isn't recorded.

Detectives are hoping a business or homeowner will have surveillance video of the car coming or going through the area.

"It is very important if people hear or see anything to let us know because they're seeing and hearing things we are not going to be," said Sgt. Lori Bonner with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
