LITTLETON, Colo. – City of Littleton officials said one man has died after a fire broke out at the Windermere senior apartment community just east of downtown early Saturday morning.

Michael Craig Mitchell, 70, was identified by officials as the victim who died following the fire on South Datura Street.

At least 13 other people were taken to the hospital for treatment. Of those, three were reported to have been seriously injured. Their conditions are not known at this time.

Considered a “mass casualty incident” due to the number of patients and potential patients at the senior housing building, fire officials said approximately 100 first responders were at the scene of the blaze on Saturday.

Due to the air quality in the building, displaced residents will not be allowed back into the apartment complex until at least Monday, Littleton Fire Rescue officials said in a press release late Saturday.

Residents affected by the fire can call the leasing office at (303) 795-2902 to find out when they will be allowed back into their apartment.
