Missing toddler found badly injured has died

Police say a missing toddler found critically injured in a Lakewood apartment later died at a hospital.

Police spokesman Steve Davis said the boy may have been found with something wrapped around his neck, but they don't know if that was accidental or not.

The call about the missing boy came just before 12 p.m. Monday afternoon from an apartment in the 2500 block of South Sheridan Boulevard, Davis said. That address is north of 285 and west of Federal Blvd.

The caller indicated that the 2-year-old boy, Donny Ro'Mello Romero, had been missing for about 10 minutes.

Police and family members began searching the area. Officers also conducted a thorough search of the apartment. Within a few minutes the injured boy was found inside in another area of the apartment.

The child was unconscious and immediately transported to a hospital in very critical condition. Just before 2 p.m., the child was pronounced dead by medical staff, Davis said.

At this time, Davis said investigators aren't sure if a crime was committed.

Davis said the child's mother was in the apartment along with two or three additional adults.

Lakewood police detectives have secured the scene and are requesting a search warrant before continuing their investigation. Detectives will treat the apartment as a crime scene until they get a more clear indication of how the boy died.

Detectives are interviewing the mother and several other people and associates of the family and do not believe there is any danger to the community, Davis added.
