GOLDEN, Colo. — Hundreds of students were evacuated and released Monday at Golden High School following an unsubstantiated report of a student with a gun on campus.

Golden High School went on a precautionary lockdown Monday and Golden police was made aware of the report. Officers, who arrived on scene around 8:15 a.m., said in a news release there were no active threats, injuries or emergencies.

Students were told to stay outside temporarily while police performed a search of the school. Officers then reviewed security footage as part of their investigation into the report. The Jefferson County Department of School Safety was also on scene with Golden police to look into what happened, the high school told staff and parents.

A preliminary investigation found a student in class "and determined the reported weapon was actually a cardboard prop gun that was briefly shown to a fellow classmate and not used to threaten other students," police said in a news release later in the day.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., Golden police said they had successfully completed a controlled release and evacuation of students. The lockdown was then lifted.

"The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released to the public as soon as it becomes available," a police department spokesperson said.

No criminal charges will be filed regarding the incident, police said.

Parents and guardians were advised to keep an eye on communications from Golden High School for detailed information about resuming normal school operations and any potential follow-up actions, police said.
