DENVER -- A new clothing store has officially opened its doors along Welton Street in Five Points with one noticeable absence: a cash register.
The “Humanity” boutique is operated by a local nonprofit called Impact Locally that works with the homeless and those in need. What makes it unique is that everything is free.
“I wanted to create a store where they could come in and shop, pick clothing off of racks, actually have a fitting room to try on their stuff,” Impact CEO Travis Smith told Denver7.
That’s exactly what the small, one-room store provides. Three days a week, anyone in need can come in, pick out a few items, and leave.
“This isn’t something people have access to a lot,” Smith said. “Without clothing, people will freeze out here.”
Smith himself was almost homeless years ago. He credits other nonprofits for the work they do, but recognized that there are some shortfalls with clothing giveaways in parking lots. That’s when he decided to open this store.
“It’s a good feeling to have people care like this,” shopper Kimberly Wood told Denver7.
Wood is homeless, and was able to pick out clothing she needed free of cost.
“I got something really thick with some fur in it because the weather is still a little brisk,” she said.
Humanity is accepting donations for the store, with some exceptions. For more information, head to https://www.impactlocally.org.
The store is open Tuesday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
