FBI agent in accidental Denver bar shooting is decorated war veteran

DENVER – The off-duty FBI agent whose erratic dance moves ended with one man getting shot in the leg at a downtown Denver bar last weekend is a decorated war veteran, according to military records obtained late Friday by ABC News.

Chase Bishop, 29, a Washington D.C.-based FBI agent visiting Denver for training, was dancing at Mile High Spirits early Saturday morning before accidentally firing his handgun after it fell from his holster when he executed a backflip trying to impress a crowd of onlookers.

Among those in the crowd was 24-year-old Tom Reddington, who was shot in the leg by the single round of gun fire.

Records released by the Department of Defense and obtained by ABC News show Bishop served in the Army from November 2011 to February 2017. Records show Bishop was deployed to Afghanistan in February 2013. He was an Army Intelligence Officer and achieved the rank of captain in October 2016.

Bishop was also twice awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, a Meritorious Unit Commendation and a Global War of Terrorism Service Medal, among others, according to ABC News.

The Denver Police Department reiterated they’re still waiting for pending lab results before deciding if he’ll face charges in connection with the accidental shooting.

Speaking to ABC News earlier this week, an FBI official said Bishop would be “held accountable” for what he did but added that the “stupid” actions of one agent should not speak for the agency as a whole.
