Two firefighters injured in recycling plant fire; cause, origin still under investigation

DENVER – Investigators have yet to determine what caused a massive fire that broke out at a recycling plant near Commerce City on Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze at the EVRAZ Recycling lot, located at 5601 York St. in unincorporated Adams County, was knocked down at approximately 7 o’clock Wednesday morning, but crews remained on scene to check for hot spots until about 4:36 p.m., according to a spokesperson with the Adams County Fire Rescue.

Fire officials said in a Wednesday evening update that the cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.

Two firefighters were taken to local hospitals with non-serious injuries, according to the Adams County Fire Rescue spokesperson.

A total of 12 units and 29 firefighters from several different agencies responded to the fire.
