A woman traveling southbound on I-25 near Castle Rock was surrounded by a group of street racers, according to Colorado State Patrol.

The group reportedly surrounded drivers last weekend, then slowed down traffic allowing street racers to compete.

Colorado State Patrol received the report from a woman who was driving on I-25 last Saturday.

"She was absolutely terrified for a time being because she’s driving along southbound on the interstate and all of a sudden the cars show up out of nowhere," said Capt. Jeff Goodwin.

Goodwin said street racing has been an ongoing problem but he's recently received more complaints about racing on I-25. He believes the problem is growing and worries because it is incredibly dangerous.

The Colorado State Patrol said it will be stepping up its efforts to catch street racers after this most recent report. Goodwin said overtime dollars and extra manpower will be used to go after these risky drivers.

"It will just be a matter of us being in the right place at the right time and being able to catch them while they’re in the act," said Goodwin.

Police offer the following tips to drivers if they find themselves in the middle of a street racing incident.

  • Don't make eye contact, don't panic.
  • Get a license plate number and description of the cars for police.
  • Pull off to a safe location and call police. Drivers can call also call *277 to be connected with state patrol directly.
